Ozone in Livestock Wastewater Treatment

The farm’s wastewater treatment process begins with conventional steps, but includes advanced membrane filtration to avoid chemicals. Reverse osmosis is applied to remove nitrogen.

PAOR’s Ozone Step Design

Primozone partner PAOR designed the ozone treatment step, already successfully applied to multiple livestock farms in South Korea. The ozone step features a re-circulating tank where high-concentration ozone is precisely dosed. This enables efficient dissolution of ozone in water, reducing COD levels to below 30 mg/l.

In Ochang, South Korea, the LG Chemicals facility produces electric car batteries and display panel film. To ensure sustainable operations, the company uses ozone for wastewater treatment, reducing COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) from 300 ppm to 100 ppm. Each of the two water-treatment plants on-site has a capacity of 70 cubic meters per hour and operates six GM48 ozone generators.

After four years of using another brand of ozone generator, LG Chemicals experienced technical issues that prompted a search for a more reliable solution. The company replaced the existing units with six Primozone GM48 ozone generators in one wastewater treatment plant. Impressed by the performance, LG Chemicals added another six GM48 units in the second plant the following year.

While the GM48 ozone generators showed similar power consumption to the previous machines, LOX costs were reduced by 30%, demonstrating both efficiency and cost savings. Today, the Primozone GM48 units continue to operate reliably at LG Chemicals, supporting sustainable and effective wastewater treatment.

Cooling tower water and ozone

The use of ozone in cooling tower water systems has several functions. The water for the E.ON cooling tower comes from a small river and contains bacteria and other contaminations when entering the system. These bacteria need to be destroyed to prevent bacterial growth in the cooling tower.

Ozone is a very strong disinfectant, it is much more efficient than chlorine on for example E. Coli bacteria and Legionella Pneumo-Phila. In addition, it leaves no residue and the water can safely be let back out into the river. Ozone is, therefore, the most effective and environmentally friendly method of controlling the microbiology of cooling tower water.

Ozone also prevents biological deposits inside the cooling water tower and the heat exchangers, which otherwise can create problems like blocking and corrosion.
